Diwali-Activities-for-kids-Free-Printables

DIWALI or Deepawali – is the biggest Hindu festival. It refers to the festival of lights which is celebrated by lighting rows of lamps (deep or diyas). It signifies victory of truth, triumph of good over evil , knowledge over ignorance and light over darkness.

Festival of Diwali is celebrated in the Kartik month which falls around October or November, the exact dates vary every year according to the Hindu Calendar.

It’s very important to teach our kids about the relevance and traditions of the festivals, and the best way to do that is by involving them in the festival preparations, telling them stories behind the festivities and importance of rituals, making sweets & snacks, decorating the house, doing some crafts & activities or making hand-made gifts & cards for friends & family.

Kids always love and enjoy when they are allowed to be a part of the celebrations and when they are given responsibilities.

Some easy Diwali Crafts & Activities to do with kids at home:

Decorating Diyas:

Kids love colors and what would be better than lighting the  lamps decorated by the tiny hands. So just let them paint the diyas with their imagination. They can even stick stars, mirrors or embellishments to their hand-painted diyas.

Rangoli:

Draw a simple design by chalk/white color on floor and allow them to fill their colors of choice. Elder kids can draw their own rangoli designs as well.

For younger kids, rangoli can be created on chart paper or paper plate or cardboard – by applying glue over a design and then letting them spread the colors over glue.

Stories/Books:

Kids have a lot of queries and curiosity about the reasons behind rituals and practices. So it’s nice to read this all to them and enlighten them through books written for kids.

Paper Lanterns are easiest to make with kids. Use colorful papers and make lanterns of different sizes. Lanterns can be hung on wall or kept on desks, tables and chests with lights inside.

Greeting Cards:

It’s always lovely to give each other festive cards, and it would cherish relations by teaching kids to prepare cards for their friends, teachers and even family members.

Use glitter pens, glitter glue, foam, star stickers, etc. to decorate the card. We made these Diwali cards for teachers. And little one was super happy when the teacher pinned them on the class notice board.
